Install
- Install TrueGantt from the Atlassian Marketplace.
- Open any Jira Software project and select Gantt in the project sidebar.
- The first time you open it, choose the date field TrueGantt should use for start dates.
Choosing the start-date field
Jira has a Due date on every issue but no reliable start date. TrueGantt asks you to pick a Date Picker custom field — existing or new — so start dates stay visible in JQL and in every other report.
Until a field is mapped, the chart shows one-day bars ending on each issue's due date, each marked with a dashed left edge. Nothing is written to your instance without your choice.
Rescheduling
- Move an issue: drag its bar. Every dependent that would otherwise start before its predecessor finishes is pushed automatically, previewed in amber.
- Move the whole chain: hold
Shiftwhile dragging to shift the task and all of its dependents by the same amount. - Change duration: drag the right edge of a bar.
- Cancel: press
Escbefore releasing. - Undo:
Ctrl/⌘+Z. One undo step per change, however many issues moved.
Dependencies
TrueGantt reads Jira's blocks and is blocked by links. Other link types — relates to, duplicates, clones — are ignored because they carry no scheduling meaning. Arrows are drawn finish-to-start.
If the links form a cycle, the app names the issues in the loop and stops rescheduling rather than guessing.
Baselines
A baseline is a snapshot of every start and end date at a point in time. Capture one before a plan is approved, then compare the live plan against it. Baselines are stored inside the app and are never written into your issue fields.
Permissions
Reading a project requires Browse Projects. Editing requires Edit Issues, checked per issue before anything is written. Jira's issue-level security applies — you cannot see or change an issue you would not otherwise be able to see or change in Jira.
Zoom and layout
Switch between Week, Month and Quarter scales in the toolbar. The chart only draws rows in view, which is why large projects stay responsive.
Troubleshooting
An issue is missing from the chart
TrueGantt only shows issues that have a due date or a mapped start date. Add either and it appears.
A bar shows a dashed left edge
The issue has no start date, so the bar is a one-day placeholder ending on its due date. Set a start date to make it a real bar.
Changes are refused
You do not have Edit Issues permission on that project, or the issue is protected by issue-level security. The app names the issues that failed rather than silently skipping them.
